Optimizing Your Website to Increase Search Engine Traffic

By: Lisa Alexander

SEO has been around a long time, but longstanding is ringing spot on! So many people will throw money at Google Adwords, which isn’t a bad idea, and if you are very familiar with how the system works, but SEO really needs to be the main part of your recipe to increase traffic through search engines.

To make a website function at its best and most effective use is to utilize search engine marketing. This includes keyword density, which involves research for the best words and phrases to use. Essentially you need to find out what your prospects are searching for, exactly!

Another strategy to consider it Meta tags.

What are Meta tags? Well they are tags part of the HTML coding that describes various aspects of your website or page. These are words that express what your page is about, that can be placed in your header. Search engine spiders typically scan and assess these words for site content relevance. The more relevant the words are the more your site is crawled by Google, Yahoo, MSN and most major search engines. In short, it just helps search engines locate your page.

What is a header?

A header in your web page is part of the HTML coding, which looks something like this.

Title of the document

Yet another tactic to use is Content Optimization. Much like keyword density but geared more toward matching up with your Meta tags.

Now what do you do to optimize your images?

This is fairly easy to do. When you take photos on your camera, the typical format is the date and maybe time. You upload it to your computer and it may read photo0304. You might find a photo online that you’d like to use. You save it in your photos with the default name, which may look like this: “T29611B”. What you want to do, before you add it to your site is simply change the name.

Let’s say you have a sewing oriented site and the main focus is on Embroidery. You’ve just taken a close up shot of your new needle threader, to show others what it looks like up close.

Now that we have the scenario, let’s talk about how to get your photo indexed by naming it appropriately. This is another way people may find your site, is just by the name of your photo! We’ll get to that in a minute.

When someone is searching for the needle threader, they may not just type in “threader”, it’s most possible they will be more specific in their search. For example, “Embroidery Needle Threaders” or “needle threader tool”. So, the name of your photo should be specific to what you might search for.

Here’s an example: embroidery_needle_threader

If you notice, the words aren’t all together. They are separated by an underscore. This is important to search engines. Search engines will crawl sites for specific key words and embroideryneedlethreader is not a word!

You can also spate the words by a dash. For example: embroidery-needle-threader will work too.

To follow up on another way people may find your site, is by searching in Google images for photos. They find your picture named “embroidery_needle_threader” and click on that. It will take them directly to the page on your site with that photo!

Pick a good URL!

Now if you haven’t registered a site yet, but are considering putting your business or idea online, it’s important to have a relevant keyword URL if at all possible. This will give you a good start.

For example, you have an idea about helping others find jobs from home.

Having a URL similar to telecommute-jobs.com or non-phone-jobs.com or even nonphonejobs.com can really increase the chances of your site being found by someone searching for those specific words.

Other ways to consider increasing your site traffic with SEO practices are inbound link building. Posting your links to major search engines, telling them you exist. You can use site maps and resources, or even trade links with others in the same niche.

SEO isn’t rocket science, but it takes a lot of constant steps, and when done right, you will have long lasting results!
