It’s no secret that we are in tough economic times. Many people want to cut back but aren’t sure where to begin. Here are a few ways that you will hardly even notice. This will be a little hard at first but with a little determination I promise you can do it. Quit buying so many paper towels! Most people spend between $15 or more a month. Alternative - I still occasionally use paper towels for some things but I only buy a few rolls spending around $3 a month. Instead, I use hand towels. I make sure to keep one next to the paper towels to remind everyone to grab it instead of the paper towels. I also keep a towel specifically for spills. Original - $180 / yr Alternative - $36 /yr Savings - $144 /yr If you treat your family of four to the movies only once a month, you are spending at least $40 and that is if you are going easy on the snacks. Alternative - Instead, stay home and rent a movie. You can rent movies from Red box for only $1 a night. Go to their website and see where they are located. If you sign up for their list they will text you a code for a free movie every Monday! Pop your own popcorn and drink tea and you can spend only $3 for your family night it! Original - $480 /yr Alternative - $36 /yr Savings - $444 /yr People are eating a lot more chicken these days because it’s so much less expensive than red meat. If you eat chicken four times a week you are probably spending around $16. Alternative – Buy in bulk! I buy a ten pound bag of quarter legs from Wal-Mart. I spend under $6! I cut them myself and get at least four meals if not more! Original - $832 /yr Alternative - $312 /yr Savings - $520/yr If you are a soda drinker, this may be difficult but it is just another habit you can break. If you shop around you may be able to buy two cases or soda for $5. Most families drink much more than that a week. Alternative – Drink Iced Tea. At Sam’s wholesale club I bought enough tea for 2 months if we drank a whole gallon a day and it was only $8! Original - $260/yr Alternative - $52 /yr Savings - $208 /yr Something simple such as using dish rags instead of sponges will save you big time! Original - $57 /yr Alternative - $3 if you don’t have them already! Savings - $54 /yr Do you pack Little Debbie Snacks in your little one’s lunch? The last time I checked they were $1.60 a box for the good ones. If you have multiple kids you are buying multiple boxes. Alternative – I spend about 50 cents making a batch of 12 banana raisin muffins. They are also healthier than the Little Debbie Snacks. Original - $83 /yr (boxes / week Alternative - $26 Savings $57 /yr As you can see, making a few easy changes you can be on your way to saving money. Now sit back and see where else you can cut back.
