Snacks to Quell Those Mid-Afternoon Cravings

By: Jenn Givler

It’s 3:00 PM do you know where your appetite is?

If you’re anything like me, right around this time you’re starving. And you’re craving something… sometimes, something not-so-good.

I usually crave salty snacks.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to put the kibosh on the craving without killing my nutrition for the day.

Pita Chips with Hummus

Hummus is a creamy, flavorful dip made of garbanzo (soy) beans, sesame seeds and herbs and spices. It's great on crackers, or pita chips.

It's low in calories and quite filling - perfect replacement to potato or plain corn chips.

Strawberry Soup

This is a quick snack you can make in the morning and take with you. Take about 15 to 20 strawberries, 1/4 of a cup of pine nuts, and about an oz. of Macadamia nuts (use raw - not roasted - to save on calories). Blend everything together in the blender.

If you leave it sit in the fridge for a while it takes on a thicker consistency. It’s refreshing and delicious - and sweet - in the healthy way ;)

Banana Wrap

This is a new favorite of mine. Take a whole wheat tortilla, add some nut butter (I like almond), and then cut up a banana. Roll, and enjoy!

Nuts and Seeds

If you get the salty craving like I do, try a handful of nuts and seeds. Like raw almonds and sunflower seeds. Just a handful will do though - gotta watch the fat content and calories. There’s endless possibilities here, so peruse your grocery store and see what appeals to you.

If you find that you’re ravenous by mid-afternoon - make sure you’re eating enough. Especially if you’ve recently increased your physical activity.

You can’t starve yourself and be healthy. There are ways to determine how many calories your body needs (don’t go by what the national standards are, or average amounts - YOU are an individual).

Having enough calories from the right kinds of foods can do wonders for your health, energy, and body!
