Twitter lists… should you use them?

By: Corrie Petersen

Twitter recently introduced lists. There is a lot of hype about them right now. Some people think they are great, while others are not so sure. I wasn’t sure, so I had to ask my followers for their advice. Of course, many of them said they were still learning about them.

What I have learned is you can create lists that are private and public. Now you may ask, what is the point in creating a list that can be private or public? Well there are many reasons why you would want to create these types of lists. Let’s discuss these lists in detail first.

If you have a private list, nobody can see the people on that list but you. A public list is one you can create and others can see it. Keep this in mind when you create the different lists that will help you. When you are creating your lists, you will be given the option to make them public or private.

Now that you have a better understanding of the lists and the two you are able to create, we can talk about the needs for each.

• Private lists

There are so many reasons why you would want to make your lists private. You may want to protect yourself or your customers and clients. For example, if you were a ghostwriter, you could list all your ghostwriting clients on a private list. Now the reason for this is privacy. Some people don’t care that they use a ghostwriter for their articles or blog posts, but some do. Those that do may not want the Twitter world to know that they don’t write their own content.

Another example would be a VA client list. If you want to create a list of all your VA clients, you might want to create a private list for the same reason as a ghostwriter would want to keep her list private. Protecting the privacy of your clients is a must.

One last example of the need to use a private list would be for family members. If you have family on Twitter, you might not want all of Twitterland to know that they are your family. That is a privacy thing that carries on further than customers and clients.

• Public lists

Public lists can be very helpful to others and the reason for this is because you will be sharing your information with others. If you create a list of all your coaching friends and make that list public, one of your followers may catch that list and go find the coach they’ve been looking for all month. Not only will you have helped them out, but you helped the other person as well.

Another benefit to this type of list is you can keep track of all people within a certain group and help them if and when you can. You might also run across a person within your group that can help you and you would have completely missed the post had you not created the list.

The option to use lists on Twitter could bring you more business, more friends, and new contacts. If you are on Twitter for business purposes, you should consider using them. If you are on Twitter just to socialize and meet new people, you might consider lists for that.

Look for lists on the right side of the page when you are surfing from page to page during your Twitter journeys. See what ideas you can get from them and see how you can use them to your advantage. You should also consider creating your own lists so you can benefit from them as well.
