Get More Traffic by Writing Articles for Your WAHM Website

By: Denise Willms

If only getting more traffic to your WAHM website was as easy as, say, writing an article.

Actually, it can be, so long as your article is about the right topic, contains the right words, and is published in the right place. Let me elaborate.

The Right Topic

How can you find out what your target market wants to read about? It doesn’t take a lot of guesswork, just a little keyword research.

If you haven’t done keyword research before, it’s not as daunting as it sounds. “Keyword” simply refers to the terms people type into search engines to look for information. And the research is easy to do. Type words relating to your business into a keyword research tool, and you’ll get a list of all the words and phrases people have searched for that include that word.

Here are some popular keyword research tools:

Once you’ve found out what information people are looking for, choose the terms that are most appropriate to your business.

Another place to find good keywords for your product or service is in your own web stats. Look under “Search String” to find the terms that people used to find your site. It's a good idea to add these to your list of article topics because people who used those search terms were attracted to your site.

The Right Words

Now that you have compiled a list of article topics, it’s time to write those articles. Write an article for each keyword or phrase you selected above, making sure to include the exact search terms in the title and the body of the article.

For example, when I wanted to write a homeschool article to attract more visitors to my article directory, I discovered that “homeschool while working from home” was a popular search phrase. This told me that work-at-home-moms wanted information about homeschooling while working from home, and I also knew the search terms they were using to look for it.

I used this information to write a Question and Answer article called: “I’m thinking of homeschooling my children. Can I homeschool while working from home?” Because I used a popular search term in the title, I attracted many new readers who may not otherwise have found the article directory.

The Right Place

The best place to publish your new article is usually on your own website. This provides new, unique, and relevant content for both the search engines and your visitors. Since you have incorporated your keywords and phrases into your article, there’s a good chance your site will come up in the search results when those terms are searched on.

To help your article be found for relevant searches, include your keyword-rich title in the page description and format the article title as a heading.

Many website owners place articles deep within the site. This is frequently a mistake. Search engines (and human visitors) don’t usually like to dig too far to find content, so make your articles easy to find.

I’ve had the best results with articles that I publish on my front page, but if that’s not possible, try to include a link to your new article on your homepage. If you have a blog, you should also add your article there, along with a link to your website.

A rule of thumb that most article writers follow is to keep a new article exclusively on their own site for thirty days. After the thirty-day period, they begin submitting them to article directories and other publishers. This gives the search engines a chance to crawl their articles on their own websites and identify it as new and unique content.

Can writing and publishing articles on your website really increase your traffic?

Yes. At WAHM-Articles, most of our traffic comes from people who type in a search query that closely matches an article’s title.

As with any business strategy, successful Article Marketing is all about taking the time to learn what people are looking for, giving them what they need, and placing it somewhere they can find it.
