Hang Tag Printing Options Explained

By: Janice Jenkins

When you print hang tags for your products, there are several options that you need to think about before you send it out to your hang tag printing company. These options will determine the quality of your hang tags, its appearance and of course its overall cost. So as you can see, it is important to know these before you go straight on to hang tag printing. You have to match those options with your design and your budget for your hang tags. To help you balance this all out, here are the facts about hang tag printing options.

Paper types
The paper type is one of the things that you need to know about when hang tag printing. Most printers don't just use normal paper. There are different kinds, and each has a different cost. By far, the most expensive paper type for hang tags is the paper that has a glossy sheen on both sides. This type of paper provides a nice professional finish. If you are printing hang tags for a business seminar, or other more formal or professional environments, this option may be a must for you.

If however, your budget cannot take too many expensive turns (they are just hang tags after all) then you can also try just having a paper type with only glossy coating on one side, or on the cover. If your hang tag design only has a front cover with a blank back, then this option will be perfect. You can save on money on the blank back since people won't really mind it.

Finally, the cheapest option for hang tag papers is the uncoated option. This basically involves printing in untreated or uncoated paper without any special materials in it. This is perfect for those trying to adjust their budget to invest in other more important printouts.

Printing
After the paper type, the next thing you may want to decide on is the printing itself. This is mainly dependent on your design. If you have a double sided color design for your hang tags then you may need to choose the printing option “4-color double or both sides”. This can also be represented by as “4-4” in some areas. The “4 color” stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black or CMYK which is the standard printing color mix nowadays. Having color on both sides is the most expensive but best option for hang tags. Again, if you are saving money and you have only a one sided hang tag design with a blank back, you can opt to only print in color on the front of the hang tags. This is usually termed as a “4-0” or a 4 color front with blank back.

Holes
The next option that you need to know is about the drill holes. Since hang tags are meant to be hanged onto a product or onto another tag, you will need holes. You can specify the whole location when you give the job to your hang tag printing service. Some people make the mistake in thinking that they cannot do this in printing companies. But they do! You do not need to punch holes onto your hang tags yourself. Just contact your hang tag printer to drill holes into your hang tags in a specific location. Of course make considerations on your design when you decide on the location of that hole. Typically this comes almost at no or little cost for printing companies.

Corners
Lastly, you have the option of having standard corners into your hang tags or having rounded corners. Rounded corners require extra work and cost, but it makes you hang tags more unique because of its unconventional appearance. If you are a bit of a traditionalist though, or if you just want to save some money, and then just print with normal corners instead.

So those are the important things that you need to know about your hang tag printing options. Hopefully this makes your hang tag printing process faster since you already know what you want from the printer when you meet him or her.
