Everyone knows there are millions of "get rich quick" scams floating around the internet. These range from "set up your web site in 5 minutes and earn thousands a month!" to "All it takes is minutes a day and you'll be filthy rich like me". Well, I've never bought into any of these notions. In fact when I consult with clients I always tell them that an internet business is just like any other - it takes time, dedication, and effort. Recently though I came across a site by accident that soon became for me, an "obsessive" spare time hobby, and it always is allowing me to work toward earning a potential $10,000 in the next several months, just for doing what I love doing anyway! No, not a "get rich quick" scheme. In fact, depending on how much you contribute, you may not make anything. And this is only a one-time event, so it won't make you regular income. But if you are already blogging, or offering opinions on other people's blogs, or just want to share your own voice about matters of interest in your area, this might be a perfect way to make a little extra cash. So what is it? Well, a new up-and-coming news media site is trying something different. In addition to reporting news from traditional media outlets like print newspapers and television coverage, this site allows ANYONE (yup, even me) to report news stories as they happen in your area. If you register, report news, and people view your news on their site, you get "page view credits". Get at least 100,000 page views in the next several months and you'll earn $1,000. You can earn an additional $1,000 for every 100,000 page views more, up to $10,000 (that would be for one million page views during the six month period). You don't even have to know how to write to participate. You just have to register, and then contribute content that generates page views to the site. So let me break this down into simple steps, since I seem to be a bit too excited and maybe jumbling things up. Go to my profile (listed in the Resource box below this article). At the top right of the page is text for you to register to the site. Once you are registered be SURE to check the box in your profile settings indicating that you want to participate in the Excellence in Citizen Media Initiative (they will send you a confirmation eMail so you'll know if you've been enrolled). Then, just start submitting content to the site. You can submit news, blog posts, opinions, editorials, videos, photos, anything related to current events and what is going on in the world. Of course in order to make money you have to get page views to the site. Here's how I've been doing it: --- I submit at least 2 articles a day. Submitting regularly ensures that my news article will be listed on one of the main pages of the site, generating more traffic for my total page view stats. These articles don't have to be long (though many of mine are). They can be one paragraph, just a photograph or video, or any combination of "information" relevant to your world. --- I use social networking tools I was already using to get more readers to my articles. Which one's do I use? I use, regularly, Twitter, Facebook, my own blog, and occassionally my business website. There are more, where I list my profile link, but I don't think they have been as effective as these. -- I provide ping-backs, and post content from other sites. The ping backs on the originating site helps generate traffic to my articles, and helps move the article up in rank in search engines --- I regularly submit articles I've posted there to article submission sites. Sometimes I'll provide most of the article, but not all. The reader then clicks the link to see the whole thing, or they go there to see more of what I've written. --- I send out summaries of articles I've submitted to my "joke list". This is a list of my family and friends that I sometimes send funny jokes to. They then, of course click the link to view my article. These are just a few of the ways I've used so far to generate traffic, but of course there are literally hundreds of ways you could think of as well! So there you have it! If you have a few minutes every day, that you would probably spend surfing anyway, and you want to make a little money, then be sure to check it out! Click my profile link below to get to the site and see what I've been working on and how I'm doing. Then, model your profile page after mine (doesn't bother me, we can help one another; be sure to let me know and I'll add you as a "fan" on my profile).
